Panniculectomy surgery

An abdominal pannus is an apron of skin and fat that hangs down from the lower abdomen. It may , sometimes cover the anterior thighs, hips, and even knees. A large pannus can interfere with daily routine activities of the affected person. Skin infections, rashes, itching & poor hygiene are common complaints in persons with a substantial pannus.

A panniculectomy is a surgery performed to relieve these symptoms. In a panniculectomy, the excess skin and fat hanging from lower abdomen are removed. Plication of the abdominal wall fascia is not performed like it is done in Abdominoplasty. An abdominoplasty is a cosmetic procedure, usually involving fascial plication while panniculectomy is more of therapeutic in nature.
